Positions for Birth: How Gravity and Movement Help

Positions for Birth: How Gravity and Movement Help

Lying flat on your back for long periods can make contractions more uncomfortable for some people and affect blood flow. Changing position whenever possible is a simple, powerful strategy.

Standing with support from your partner or doula, or slow walking, uses gravity and may ease back pressure.

Hands-and-knees or kneeling forward is often comfortable for sacral massage and gentle pelvic movement.

Side-lying with a pillow between the legs, or sitting on a birth ball, can keep the pelvis open without overloading your legs.

In the pushing phase, semi-sitting, supported squat, or side-lying may be options depending on your clinical situation β€” talk with your team about what is available where you plan to give birth.

An experienced doula suggests timing and position changes while respecting monitoring and medical guidance. The goal is for you to feel like the main character in your own body.
