When to Go to the Hospital or Birth Center?

Mild, irregular contractions can last for hours โ hydrate, rest, and notice the pattern. Not every tummy ache is active labor.
In low-risk pregnancies, many teams suggest arriving when contractions are strong, regular, and closer together (a common rule is 5-1-1: every five minutes, lasting one minute, for about an hour โ confirm with your protocol).
Rupture of membranes, heavy bleeding, decreased fetal movement, or severe constant pain are reasons to call your provider immediately or go to the ER as directed in your prenatal care.
Your doula can help you interpret what youโre feeling by phone or message and choose the best time to travel โ avoiding arriving too early or too late.
For long drives, keep a small bag in the car and know your route. Calm on the way matters.
Every protocol is unique: use this as a conversation with your team, not a rigid rule. Weโre here to help you prepare with clarity.
